What is sleep dentistry?

Sleep dentistry is also known as sedation dentistry and is exactly what it sounds like – dental treatment while you’re under! Riverina Dental Albury Wodonga offer sleep dentistry from a local day-clinic where we can provide gentle anaesthesia before your treatment. We use sedation or anesthesia to help you feel more relaxed, comfortable, and less aware of the dental work.

If you have a fear of seeing the dentist, have low pain tolerance, or are undergoing complex treatments such as root canal treatment, sleep dentistry can make the experience more comfortable.

How Sleep Dentistry Works

Sleep dentistry does not always involve putting you to sleep for dental treatment. Before your dental treatment, our dentists will discuss your personal level of fear or pain tolerance and your medical history to determine the level of sedation that is right for you.

When you are ready, our dentists will place a small mask over your nose and mouth and ask you to breathe in a small amount of nitrous oxide gas (also known as laughing gas). Soon after breathing in the gas, you will feel much more relaxed and calm. This gas sedative is completely safe, and the effect will last throughout the dental visit.

Our dentists will only start dental work when you are under the full effect of sedation. You will not feel any pain during the treatment.

Sleep dentistry includes the option of general anaesthesia. With general anaesthesia, you will be completely unconscious during dental treatment and only awake after the procedure is completed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are there any risks of sleep dentistry?

You may feel some lingering effects of the sedation after dental treatment. This is normal and will not have a lasting impact on your health. Some side effects from sedation include mild grogginess, slurred speech, and minor retrograde amnesia, all of which usually fade within a couple of hours.

Our dentists carry out thorough checks of each patient’s medical history before recommending sleep dentistry as an option.

Which dental procedures are applicable to sleep dentistry?

We recommend sleep dentistry for dental procedures that are long or complex such as root canal treatment, wisdom teeth extraction, and periodontal surgery. However, sleep dentistry can also be applied to more routine dental procedures to provide a more comfortable experience for patients. We also offer for sleep dentistry patients who have a pronounced gag reflex or a fear of dental visits.

What happens during and after sleep dentistry?

After sedation is applied, your dentist will carry out the required dental procedure. Depending on the level of sedation, you may or may not be aware during treatment. You can rest assured that you will not feel any pain throughout.

Once the treatment is complete, your dentist will provide instructions to you and your accompanying friend or family member on the next steps for recovery and care.

Is sleep dentistry safe?

Yes, sleep dentistry is completely safe. Dental sedation techniques have been used by dentists since the 1900s and are one of the best ways to help anxious patients receive the dental care they need without undue discomfort.

Can I attend dental treatment with sleep dentistry on my own?

No, you will need to bring along a friend or family member to make sure you can get home safely. The effects of sedation can take a few hours after treatment to wear off so you will not be able to drive after the procedure.
